Get voting

No sooner has this week's Gazette hit the streets and we are already underway with the next issue - yes it's Easter.

One of the highlights of this week's paper is your chance to vote for the Gazette's top toddler.

We have featured 200 pictures of toddlers from across the borough and if past experience is anything to go by the phone lines will be red hot with people voting for their own favourites. You have until next Tuesday, April 10, to cast your vote and we will be announcing the winner in the Gazette edition of April 18.

After the newsdesk spent a large part of yesterday chasing around after some potentially 'big' stories which eventually came to nothing I am hoping today is more productive, especially in light of the tight Easter deadlines we are working to.

We have to get the majority of the Gazette and our free sister paper the Leader completed by Thursday evening so there is considerable pressure on the newsdesk to turn things round quickly and keep the ever hungry subs fed with copy for pages. They clearly want to get away on time and start tucking into their Easter eggs!

PS: England football manager Steve McClaren has taken a real pasting from the media over the last week or so in light of his team's less than impressive recent performances.

So, it was with great interest that I read about the regime insisted on by the great Sir Alf Ramsay, who coached the 1966 team to World Cup glory, when dealing with the media.

Apparently he would let the press in for two hours between 2pm and 4pm on a Thursday and that was their lot. Sir Alf's outlook was that his job was 'winning not talking.'

My how times have changed on both fronts ...

Comments...

"the phone lines will be red hot with people voting" - so you'll be publishing the total number of votes cast then? Bet it doesn't get much past 200... :-)

We will publish the number of votes, as usual. My comment is based on last year's top toddler competition where we received more than 2,500 votes.

Just checked stats and we have received close on 500 votes in first 24 hours, lines do not close until April 10.
