Splashing about
Just when I thought we had entered the 'silly season' we have had a strong news week with hard hitting front pages for all four editions of this week's Gazette.
Overall I am quite pleased with the the feel of the paper and after we were landed late on with five extra news pages to fill the news team have done a good job in turning everything around.
There has been a mixed reaction from readers to plans to redevelop the old Uxbridge Lido site with a a sports complex to include an Olympic sized swimming pool.
Council leader Ray Puddifoot has assured residents that the money is there to pay for this ambitious scheme and on the face of it the borough would certainly benefit from these enhanced sporting facilities.
I expect there will be further debate over the coming weeks in the Gazette on the merits of the scheme and I would certainly like to hear your views either through the blog or by going to http://www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/haveyoursay
It seems many people are now soaking up the sun after weeks of miserable weather and Uxbridge town centre has taken on almost a holiday feel as people bask in the first real warmth of the summer.
On the subject of basking it seems that great white shark fever has gripped Cornwall and several of the national newspapers.
At first I thought the whole thing was just one of those sensational 'silly season' stories that seem to crop up every summer.
However, even though Uxbridge is more than 200 miles away from the Cornish coast it seems to have generated a fair amount of interest and debate in Gazette House.
Then I asked myelf how I would cover the story if I happened to be editor of a paper in that area of Cornwall. The simple answer is that I would splash on it and milk it for all its worth - and then bask in the glory as sales soar.
Perhaps it's not such a 'silly' story after all ...
